In 1966, homosexuality was considered both “abnormal” and a criminal offense in England.
That year, illustrious playwright Sir Noel Coward wrote and produced the final play of his career, A Song At Twilight. Coward starred in the dark comedy as Sir Hugo Latymer–a closeted gay author who has experienced major professional success but had a bleak personal life.
A Song At Twilight, which is rarely produced today, is currently being presented at the Pasadena Playhouse. Director Art Manke is the leading regional director of Coward productions (this is his seventh one!). Art talked about his experiences, directing A Song At Twilight, and the play’s relevance to 2014 audiences.
